New Caledonian crows - first import via Parrot Park for international research project

New Caledonian crows are very intelligent animals. For the first time you beaobachtete in birds using tools in the food supply. Dr. Auguste von Byern, University of Oxford, manages an empirical study of social intelligence and cognitive abilities of this unique corvids. As a member of the Alex Kacelnik's Research Group she is investigating birds since 2008. This is the first time and only for research purposes approved import a group of 24 New Caledonian crows in May via the EU's official quarantine station of Parrot Park Bochum. Dr. Auguste of Bavaria took the group on July 1, 2010 personaly from Parrot Park Bochum.
Ther Parrot Park team supported the study during the four-week quarantine period with preliminary investigations. Exact measurements of the animals, wighing as well as photographs of the inside of the beaks has been taken. The different colors of black and bright plumage will be investigated to its importance for the social status of the animal inside the group.
